Reporting to the Environmental Compliance Officer and Environmental Manager, this position will be responsible for compliance of the Works with the Environmental Management System (EMS) and the Project Agreement (PA). The inspector’s role will be performed on an active construction site where working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment and possessing knowledge with environmental protection measures and typical construction activities will be required.

Role and General Responsibilities

  • Monitor and inspect construction activities daily and document compliance with environmental obligations, including environmental permits and approvals and Mobilinx Environmental Policy.
  • Use the Mobilinx online tool to maintain a log of monitoring and inspection events, including photos, to support the observations recorded monitoring and inspection events.
  • Work with Construction Team staff to ensure that identified environmental issues are addressed promptly and environmental requirements are being met.
  • Complete monitoring and inspection reports.
  • Determine the nature of environmental deficiencies and provide recommended actions to Construction Team staff to ensure compliance and prevent or mitigate potential environmental impacts.
  • Promptly provide advice and recommendations, as required, for improving environmental protection and correcting any inefficient practices and/or issues of non-compliance.
  • Investigate environmental incidents and public complaints related to environmental matters, and effectively report findings and recommendations.
  • Effectively communicate and share information with the Environmental, Design and Construction Teams.
  • Attend weekly and monthly meetings with the Environmental, Design and Construction Teams.
  • Support environmental third-party vendors at the project site as needed.
  • Supervision and coordination and reporting of spills and remedial activities.
  • Conduct air and noise monitoring using supplied hand-held equipment and provide data for reporting purposes.
  • Collection and analysis of soil and water samples, including chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Provide Environmental Awareness and Orientation Training through on-site toolbox talks and procedure rollouts and advise project team members in support of environmental compliance requirements.
  • Promote environmental awareness of the EMS and PA environmental requirements.
  • Support, on occasion, limited night or weekend works as may be required from time to time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree specializing in environmental science/management, or diploma specializing in environmental compliance management/technology/engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in all aspects of environmental monitoring / mitigation during roadway construction, specifically with respect to work in and around watercourses and in the application and correction of erosion and sedimentation control measures, reporting Spills and the containment of effluent and dust during construction, and with projects in Ontario of a similar scope and complexity to this Project.
  • Understanding of the scope and interdisciplinary nature of large infrastructure projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Systematic and structured problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and as part of a larger team.
  • Able to perform in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to carry drawings and diaries as required.
  • Ability to use stairs, ladders and climb over rough terrain.
  • Primary work location is project site office with some time spent in the main project office.
  • Project related travel anticipated using site vehicle. Valid G driver’s license required.
  • Exposure to construction work site environment in all seasons.
